FLOGGING MOLLY / Speed Of Darkness [2011]

American Celtic punk rockers Flogging Molly have always been a fun band to drink and be merry with. Perhaps even one of the best live acts I have ever seen, so it's odd to think of them as kind of boring on their fifth studio effort, Speed Of Darkness.
While the music is just as catchy as it's ever been, a certain rawness that made their first 3 albums classics is gone. With the exception of a few songs, Dave King's vocals sound less inspired than before perhaps due to the clean, over-produced sound Speed seems to have been held down with.
Lifted up with just a handful of great songs, Flogging Molly seems to be slipping into boredom and cookie cutter songwriting after this album and their last. With any luck they'll get out of this slump by their next album...or it's another casualty for a potentially great band.
