TRICKY / Maxinquaye [1995]

Tricky's debut album Maxinquaye sits smugly between Portishead's Dummy and Massive Attack's Blue Lines as one of the definitive trip-hop albums of the 90's.
While it's not as dreary or moody as his trip-hop counterparts it's certainly just as haunting and timeless. Conjuring up images of a smoky after hours saloon inhabited by shady creatures of all ages, Maxinquaye seduces you with grainy record scratches, dub like beats and murky vocal work.
Tricky creates a hazy air of mystery that never ceases to impress me. A must have for anyone interested in studying sound design and back beats.

I have this. It has enough interesting elements under the surface to appeal to me as I'm not a huge fan of his normally. My favourite of his works.
